Oyster Shell Dancing

Before dinner last night, we decided to take the kids for a walk on the beach. It was a perfectly mild and clear evening for doing so. The tide was coming in and the beach was almost empty of people.

It was Addison's first time walking on sand by herself. Aidan, however, is an old salt already. He likes to run and collect seashells and rocks to place them in the little red bucket that Addison had slung over her wrist like a purse. He had me write his name in the sand and we studied the little crabs we found left on the rocks.

Addison was slow and thoughtful as we made our way along. Aidan and daddy had run ahead to explore. At one point, we came across an older man and a young woman working on cleaning oyster shells. They were silent as they worked, but the clank and thud of their instruments on the oyster shells made a simple beat with the water as a constant background.

Noticing this sound, Addison came to a halt and filled my heart with a huge smile as she dropped her bucket and began to dance. She wiggled her hips, moved her hands in the air, and smiled as she lifted her feet up and down on the sand. No one else noticed.

My daughter heard beauty that no one else heard in the music of oyster shells.

I was lucky to witness.

What a beautiful story. My son does things like this too. It is amazing what they pick up.

Beautiful writing about a beautiful moment... It's so easy to not be mindful, to not be listening to the music of the oyster shells. And good for you to be mindful enough to see the magic of your daughter's special dance!

To see the world through their eyes is so fresh, isn't it? I love to witness this sort of thing and try to change my own perspective once in awhile. Beautiful story.

How sweet! Sometimes we need to be reminded to look (and listen) to the world through a child's eyes.

A magic moment that you will never forget. As Addison grows up and reads your posts about her, she will remember....dancing on the beach.

Now I get to carry this image around in my heart of a beautiful little person dancing with joy...putting that joy into her mother's heart. Thank you.

What an absolute treasure for you to not only witness but to have your daughter experience! I adore the ocean and the beach and plan on retiring at one in my old age LOL...but until then, I take every opportunity I can to take my children to the beach and allow them the wonder and joy that I find there as well. There's nothing more magical than the beach!

Ugh... this brought tears to my eyes (I'm obviously emotional anyway, I guess)! I feel like those moments are pure magic, like someone just flew over me sprinkling fairy dust and this precious little moment suddenly sprouts.

You're lucky to see them, too :)

That's one reason I love children so much - they see & hear beauty in things we would never think to see or hear it. What a special moment.

We took my littlest one to the beach for the 1st time 2 years ago (so she was a few months short of her 2nd birthday) and I never saw her so free! She ran forever and we have the most wonderful pictures of both girls from that trip
